Sizing a Log Splitter: 8T to 50T by Wood Diameter and Species
Short answer
Match the splitter to the round you actually handle, not to the biggest log on the property. On our range: 8T electric for clean rounds up to about 40 cm, 15T horizontal/vertical for mixed firewood up to roughly 50 cm, 25T for heavy rounds you cannot lift, and 50T for large hardwood with knots. Species matters as much as diameter - a 40 cm knotty oak takes more force than a 60 cm straight pine.
Why tonnage on its own does not tell you what a splitter can do
Three things decide whether a machine will open a round cleanly:
Diameter. The wedge has to travel through the full cross-section, so diameter sets the stroke length you need.
Species and seasoning. Dense hardwood and knotty crotch wood resist far more than the same diameter of softwood; frozen or green wood behaves differently again.
How you feed it. Vertical positions suit heavy rounds set on the ground; horizontal positions suit rounds you can roll onto the beam yourself.
The 8T to 13T range: clean, small-diameter firewood
The 8T machine is electric only - single phase, 110 V or 220 V - with a 3 HP motor, a 3.15 in cylinder bore, and a cycle time of 13 s (9 s on the optimised hydraulic circuit). It splits rounds from 0.2 in to 15.8 in (about 40 cm) and runs 46# hydraulic oil, 0.8 gal. Two versions exist: single-hand control, and a two-hand safety version with a metal shield for the European market.
The 13T flywheel model stores energy in a pair of high-inertia flywheels instead of a hydraulic circuit, which brings the cycle down to 2-3 s. It is quick and simple, and it is the wrong tool for large or very hard wood - that is a design limit, not a defect.
15T and 18T: the general-purpose band
The 15T is the model most mixed firewood operations settle on. It rotates 90 degrees, so the same machine splits vertically (round on the ground, no lifting) or horizontally (round on the beam). Splitting stroke is 520 mm and can be customised; cycle time is 15 s at 16-22 MPa with a 70 mm cylinder bore. Power comes from a Runtong 180 cc air-cooled four-stroke petrol engine - OHV, cast-iron cylinder sleeve - with both electric start and recoil, on a 3.6 L tank. Wedge choice is 2-way or 4-way. Net weight 125 kg, gross 145 kg, 1430x520x1160 mm, on 4.1-3.5-4 tyres with a transport handle.
The 18T adds a second option for the same job: a petrol 209 cc / 7 HP, diesel, or electric (single or three phase) drive. The dual-cylinder version lets the wedge height be adjusted hydraulically instead of by hand.
25T to 50T: heavy rounds and hardwood
Above about 50 cm, or in dense hardwood with knots, the limiting factor stops being the wedge and becomes handling. These models are built around that:
25T horizontal/vertical - 90-degree rotation again, petrol, diesel or electric, for rounds that are too heavy to lift onto a beam.
28T with hydraulic log lifter - an integrated lifting arm takes the round to the splitter; petrol 212 cc / 7 HP with electric and recoil start, or diesel or electric. Tyres 4.80-8.
50T dual-way - 25 HP diesel or a heavy-duty electric motor, with a reciprocating dual-way wedge that splits on the forward stroke and on the return stroke, so there is no idle travel. Supplied with a heavy log lifter.
When a firewood processor is the cheaper answer
A splitter needs someone to cut rounds to length first. If you are producing volume - a firewood business, a farm heating several buildings - the cutting step is usually the bottleneck. A firewood processor integrates the steps: log lifter, automatic chain cut to a set length, hydraulic splitting with a 4-way or 6-way wedge, and a conveyor that carries the finished firewood out. All our processors run imported German Stihl bars and chains, with a dedicated chain-oil tank, sight glass and oil-flow control.
The 30T automatic kindling splitter is the dedicated option for kindling: 270 mm stroke, 10-40 cm input diameter, 18 HP petrol or diesel or 7.5 kW electric, with a conveyor and a rotary collection system that allows bag changes without stopping. Total weight 910 kg.
Power supply and emissions
Electric models need only single or three-phase power, which suits a shed or workshop. Petrol engines in our range carry both EPA (North America) and Stage V (Europe) certification. Diesel models carry Stage V only - for North American markets, petrol or electric is the compliant choice.
Safety and compliance
Two-hand control is the core CE requirement on splitters: the ram only advances while both controls are held, and it retracts the moment either hand is released. Our 8T is available in the two-hand version and, for European buyers, in a shielded version with a steel mesh guard. CE applies across the range; JERRY machinery is a Verified Custom Manufacturer with a TUV Rheinland factory audit.
Frequently asked questions
What tonnage do I need for 40 cm oak?
For clean 40 cm oak, a 15T to 18T machine is normally enough; knotty or frozen oak of the same diameter is better served by 25T. Diameter alone is not the deciding number - density and knots are.
Can an 8T electric splitter handle hardwood?
Yes, within its diameter window: it splits up to 15.8 in (about 40 cm), and the 13 s / 9 s cycle reflects the hydraulic tuning rather than a limit on species. Very hard, knotty rounds in that size belong on a heavier machine.
Is a vertical splitter easier on the operator?
Yes, for heavy rounds. In the vertical position the round stays on the ground and the wedge comes down to it, so nothing has to be lifted. For light rounds, the horizontal position is faster because the round can simply be rolled onto the beam.
Do your petrol engines meet US and EU emissions rules?
Our petrol models are certified to EPA (US) and Stage V (EU). Diesel models are Stage V only, so for North America we recommend petrol or electric.
Log splitter or firewood processor?
If you buy cut-to-length firewood or cut it yourself with a chainsaw, a splitter is the lower-cost route. If cutting is your bottleneck, a processor combines lifting, cutting, splitting and conveying, and pays for itself in labour.
